National Safety Council uses National Safety Month to highlight a top killer: Unintended Injuries

Posted by Laurie Croft, ACG Medical Supply on 4th Jun 2014

June is National Safety Month, and ACG Medical Supply is asking that our valued customers take notice of the fifth leading cause of death - unintentional injuries, exceeded by heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory disease. Every four minutes someone in the US dies from an unintentional injury. According to the 2014 edition of Injury Facts®, 67% of all injury-related deaths in the US are due to unintentional causes.

The top three causes of unintentional injury in the US are poisoning, motor vehicle crashes, and falls. A large majority of deaths due to poisoning are attributed to the recent epidemic of prescription drug abuse and from unintentional overdoses on prescription pain relievers. According to 2012 estimates, 26% of motor vehicle crashes involved cell phone use while driving. Finally, approximately 27,800 deaths in 2012 were attributed to falls, with seven out of ten of those affecting adults over age 74.

These statistics are not just numbers, they are our family members. This year’s National Safety Month theme, Safety: it takes all of us, is a call for everyone to help prevent a tragedy in our home or car. Properly store your medications and take as directed, put down your phone while driving, and use safety features in your home. These small changes can make a huge difference.
