How to Put on Compression Stockings

Compression socks are designed to treat venous disorders such as edema and thrombosis. They increase circulations to prevent blood clots, varicose veins, venous ulcers, and tired or achy legs as well. ACG Medical Supply carries a large variety of compression garments to choose from. Some of the higher level compression socks can be difficult to put on, but there's a technique to help get them on easier. Our staff can take your measurements to assure you get a proper fitting garment and teach you how to wear them here in the store.

How to put on compression socks:

  1. Reach into the garment and grab the heel.
  2. While holding the heel, pull the sock inside out just to the heel, forming a pocket.
  3. Place the heel of the sock towards the floor, and pull the sock on your foot as far up to the heel as you can.
  4. Turn the rest of the sock right side out and up over your heel. The hardest part is getting the sock over your heel.
  5. Once you've done that, you want to ladder the sock back and forth up your leg to ensure a proper fit and compression. The garment should land about two finger lengths below your knee.
  6. Smooth out any wrinkles in the fabric.

* If you are still having trouble getting your socks on, you can also try using a stocking donner. This allows you to put the sock on to the donner and slide it up your leg.

How to put on Compression socks with a donner:

  1. Face the donner with the opening away from you.
  2. Pull the top part of the sock over the donner and slide it up to the heel of the garment.
  3. Put your foot into the sock and pull up on the handles of the donner.
  4. You may need to finish laddering the sock up your leg. The sock should land about two finger lengths below your knee cap.

* For best results, you want to put your compression garments on when you first wake up in the morning, and take them off when you are home relaxing in the evening.
